Back to Fairplay for more play during my fall break. MB and I originally intended to drive up today, but after checking the weather I made the call for us to leave on Sunday evening so we would arrive before the winter storm hit Colorado.
Waking up on Monday morning I was disappointed that we had cold rain to greet us. But I knew the temperatures would drop and that rain would convert into snow. By noon the snow had began falling, quickly covering the back porch.
This would have been what the doctor ordered after a long quarter of planning and teaching, on top of other obligations. The isolation from the real world with no internet (with the exception of MB’s blackberry which proved handily for checking gmail and facebook) and cable allowed for MB and I to focus on each other. We spent the day watching movies, drinking hot chocolate, and napping.
We brought our pumpkin with the intent to carve something out of it, however we only got to the point where we could extract seeds from the abyss of the pumpkin in order to consume them in baked form. We didn’t come prepared with a design to trace out how we’d cut into the pumpkin so we consigned the task to another day. After all, Halloween isn’t until Sunday.
Tuesday comes and we slowly, but surely pack up everything. MB had fears about the roads down to Denver, but as the de facto meteorologist and mountaineer I declared no worries about driving down so I gave MB confidence by giving her a chance to drive home.
Now we sit here watching NOVA on PBS, following the 70 days in which the miners lived through until their rescue and return to the surface. A reminder of the reality we live in. Tomorrow I shall return to school so I can focus on work and obligations while MB catches up on conference planning and design work.
